York School Board Accepting Candidates for Vacant Seat

Page Minter 2015The York County School Board decided during a special meeting Monday to solicit letters of interest and resumes from people looking to fill the District 4 seat left vacant by the death of Page Minter.

The appointment will be in the interim until a candidate is elected in a special election Nov. 8, which coincides with the general election. The election is for the remaining three years of Minter’s four-year term.

Residents interested in being considered for the interim appointment must be qualified voters and live in District 4 at the time of appointment.

The School Board canceled a Monday work session, opting for the special meeting to discuss options and potential candidates for the vacant seat.

The board has until May 19 to appoint an interim, which is a 45-day grace period from the time of the vacancy.

The board also has the option to leave the seat vacant. School Board Chairman Dr. Robert George previously said the board likely does not want to miss its chance in appointing an interim member. If no one is named within that grace period, the York-Poquoson Circuit Court would have the option to do so.

The vacant seat represents the tie-breaking vote for the five-member board, though George has noted the board always shoots for consensus when making business decisions.

The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled April 25.

As far as the special election, the county sent a petition to the York-Poquoson Circuit Court requesting the special election to coincide with the special election to fill late state Sen. John Miller’s seat in the General Assembly.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe has officially placed that election on Nov. 8, Election Day. State law allows a special election to join a general election but not a primary election.

Letters of intent and resumes should include the candidate’s mailing address, telephone number and email address (if available). The information will be accepted through 8:30 a.m. Monday and may be submitted by fax at 855-711-2060, email at rgeorge@ycsd.york.va.us or by mail or in person to York County School Board, Attention: Clerk’s Office, 302 Dare Road, Yorktown VA 23692.
