Investigators do not believe the suspect and the victim of this morning’s Farm Fresh fatal shooting knew each other.
Brian Alexander Hicks, 55, of Woodbridge, is accused of shooting 34-year-old Gabriel Ryan Maness, of Providence Forge, multiple times. It is believed Hicks acted alone, according to a news release from the James City County Police.
Maness was a customer shopping in the store, located at 115 Norge Lane, at the time of the incident.
Investigators said the motive for the shooting is unclear at this time, and there is no indication the two men knew each other nor that they engaged in an altercation prior to the shooting.
No one else was injured during the incident.
Hicks is facing felony charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, police said. He is being held without bond at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
Hicks, who is reportedly retired from the U.S. Air Force, was still in the store when police arrived and surrendered to officers without incident, police said. He was armed with a .45 caliber handgun and had two additional loaded magazines in his pocket at the time of his arrest.
Police were dispatched to the Farm Fresh in Norge at 8:05 a.m. on a report of shots fired.
The incident remains under investigation.

A 34-year-old man died in a shooting at a James City County grocery store.
Emergency dispatchers received a call at 8:05 a.m. regarding a shooting at the Farm Fresh at 115 Norge Lane, said Deputy Chief Steve Rubino, a spokesperson for the James City County Police.
One person, who was not a Farm Fresh employee, was shot and killed inside the store.
No one else was injured.
A 55-year-old man from Woodbridge is in custody. Investigators believe he was a lone shooter, Rubino said.
The store is closed at this time, as the store is currently an active crime scene.
Police are not releasing any further information at this time.
Officers from the JCC Police, Virginia State Police, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office and James City County Fire Department responded to the scene.
