A female track athlete who was traveling to the College of William & Mary was injured during a shooting at a Greyhound Bus station in Richmond on Thursday.
Binghamton University confirmed the athlete who competed on their women’s track team, and whose injuries are not life-threatening, was shot during the attack that killed a Virginia State Police trooper and injured another female.
William & Mary is hosting its 51st annual Colonial Relays at Zable Stadium this weekend, bringing 60 women’s track teams to Williamsburg.
The shooting at the bus station occurred at about 2:40 p.m. Thursday, according to Virginia State Police. Trooper Chad P. Dermyer approached a man just inside the front doors of the station. During the course of the conversation, the man pulled out a gun and shot Dermyer multiple times.
Two troopers nearby returned fire, and the suspect moved into the bus terminal’s restaurant. The suspect was combative as troopers took him into custody and EMS provided aid. He was transported to VCU Medical Center, where he later died.
The suspect’s name has not yet been disclosed.
Dermyer, a 37-year-old Jackson, Mich., native, was also transported VCU Medical Center, where he died.
Dermyer, who is survived by his wife and two children, graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy in 2014 after serving with the Newport News Police Department, Jackson Police Department (Mich.) and the U.S. Marine Corps.
The incident remains under investigation.
