For the second consecutive year, the College of William & Mary was named among the top volunteer-producing colleges by the Peace Corps.
After coming in at No. 12 in 2015 among medium colleges and universities, defined by the Peace Corps as schools having between 5,000 and 15,000 undergraduates, William & Mary is ranked tied for 10th in 2016.
William & Mary’s number of active undergraduate alumni volunteers rose to 24 in 2016 after coming in at 21 volunteers last year.
Since the founding of the Peace Corps in 1961, William & Mary has produced 623 volunteers.
“The Peace Corps is a unique opportunity for college graduates to put their education into practice and become agents of change in communities around the world,” Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet said. “Today’s graduates understand the importance of intercultural understanding and are raising their hands in record numbers to take on the challenge of international service.”
William & Mary’s contributions further helped cement Virginia as one of the top producers of Peace Corps volunteers. Virginia is the eighth-highest producer of volunteers for the organization.
