Michael Lombardo will leave his role as principal at Bethel Manor Elementary School this month to take on a new opportunity across the water.

Lombardo will become executive director of STEM and Performance Based Learning for Isle of Wight County Schools.

In an email to WYDaily, Lombardo said he is excited about his new role.

“My role as Executive Director of STEM and Performance Based Learning will allow me to support staff, students, and the community with the division’s 21st Century Learning and Engagement Initiative,” Lombardo said.

His resignation will be effective Feb. 19, nearly three months after Bethel Manor was named one of two National Title I Distinguished Schools in Virginia for the 2015-2016 academic year.

“It has been an amazing experience to serve at a school with such a great staff, talented students, and supportive parents,” Lombardo said.

Lombardo became principal at Bethel Manor in July 2014. He previously served as principal at both Magruder and Yorktown elementary schools.

Before becoming an administrator in YCSD, Lombardo was a classroom teacher at Matthew Whaley Elementary for 13 years.

It is unclear who will fill in for Lombardo through the end of the school year. Bethel Manor parents are encouraged to complete a survey online to share what qualities they think the next principal should have.
