The City of Williamsburg ended 2015 by swearing in its new appointee to the Williamsburg-James City County school board.
Julie Hummel was sworn in Thursday at the Municipal Building to serve a four-year term.
She replaces Elise Emanuel, who chose not to seek reappointment and endorsed Hummel at a November public hearing regarding school board applicants.
Gerry Walton, deputy City Council clerk, administered the oath to Hummel with Mayor Clyde Haulman, City Manager Marvin Collins, Emanuel and fellow city school board representative Kyra Cook in attendance.
City Council unanimously voted to appoint Hummel, the associate director of program development and innovation for the undergraduate business program at William & Mary, at its Dec. 10 meeting.
Hummel, 55, is a native of the Williamsburg area who graduated from Lafayette High. Her children also attended WJCC Schools, where she volunteered throughout their school careers. She also served as PTA president at Matthew Whaley Elementary School.
Her term on the school board begins Jan. 1 and expires Dec. 31, 2019.
