York County and the City of Williamsburg are helping citizens dispose of their Christmas trees this holiday season.

The county announced it is extending its free Christmas tree curbside collection program to all county communities, including those not involved in the normal curbside collection programs.

In order for non-participating communities to gain access to free Christmas tree curbside collection, homeowners associations or community management groups must provide approval for the service and designate a drop-off site within their respective communities for the trees to be collected.

For residents of communities already subscribed to the county’s solid waste collection program, trees must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4 for collection.

Alternatively, all York County residents may drop off their Christmas trees to the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority compost facility at 145 Goodwin Neck Road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Trees must not be placed in tree bags and need to have all lights, tinsel and ornaments removed before collection may occur. York County also requests all trees larger than 6-feet tall be cut in half before collected.

City of Williamsburg to Also Collect Trees

The City of Williamsburg Public Works Department will collect natural Christmas trees on Monday, Jan. 4 and Monday, Jan. 11.

Similar to York County’s tree removal, trees must be removed from their stands and have all decorations, tinsel, lights, garland and ornaments removed. Trees must be placed at the curb before 7 a.m. in order to be collected.

Trees collected will be chipped into mulch for use in city landscaped areas and flower beds.

If any resident misses the initial tree collection, trees can be placed on the curb during normal trash collection days and a contracted refuse company will pick it up.
