Bulk of I-64 Widening Work to Be Done East of Lee Hall This Week

I64 wideningMost of the construction work to widen Interstate 64 will occur east of Lee Hall this week

Single lane closures in both directions, which began last night, are scheduled between Lee Hall (exit 247) and Jefferson Avenue (exit 255). The closures will begin as early as 8 p.m. and end around 5 a.m. through Friday morning.

One travel lane will remain open to traffic at all times.

Virginia Department of Transportation warns brief traffic stops will occur on the Fort Eustis Boulevard exit ramps on eastbound I-64 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. through Wednesday morning.

VDOT crews will be conducting paving operations related to the widening. The work is dependent upon the weather.

The first phase of the widening project – projected to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction for the 5.6 miles between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and Route 143 in York County (exit 247).

The first phase is slated for completion in December 2017.

The entire I-64 widening, which will happen in three phases, will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (exit 234).
