The aroma of freshly made caramel from the new Kilwins, a specialty candy, fudge and ice cream store, on Prince George Street is drawing in new customers by catering to their sweet tooths.
Located at 421 Prince George St, Kilwins opened its doors Oct. 24 under the ownership of Chad Salecker much to the delight of those strolling through Colonial Williamsburg.
In what has become a common occurrence since opening in October, Salecker said customers have been drawn into the new Kilwins because of the tempting smell of the home-cooked caramel and chocolate.
“We get that all the time,” he joked. “Usually customers come in and don’t know who we are. They ask us how we aren’t all 300 pounds. It’s a common response to the aroma.”
The Kilwins on Prince George Street is the first Kilwins located in Williamsburg since a previous franchise location on High Street closed its doors in 2012.
Salecker said customers and other business owners have expressed their excitement about having a new Kilwins operating again in Williamsburg.
While opening an ice cream and chocolate shop as the temperatures drop has meant slightly slower business, Salecker said he still expects to have a strong December by capitalizing on the heavy tourism surrounding the Grand Illumination.
Salecker also said Kilwins is a great go-to location for delectable treats during the winter months.
“We make fabulous hot chocolate, so that usually helps sales,” he said. “We also make caramel lattes with caramel we make from scratch. We’re just a great place for holiday shopping for gifts.”
Beyond simply selling high-quality sweets, Salecker said Kilwins sells an experience that customers can enjoy with all of their senses.
With customers able to witness and smell the caramel being made on location, feel the textures of the treats, interact with the friendly customer service and, most importantly, taste the sometimes salty, sometimes sweet confections, Salecker said he expects the new Kilwins location to be a year-round success.
