Sean Myatt, a Tabb resident who challenged incumbent Robert George for the District 5 York County School Board seat, has formally filed a petition for a recount with the York-Poquoson Circuit Court.
After the election results were certified Nov. 6, Myatt had 10 days to file a petition for a recount. On election night and as recently as Friday afternoon, results show George leads the count by only one vote.
Myatt filed the petition Friday, according to the Virginia Court Case Information website. He is represented by attorney Scott Reichle, husband of Julie Reichle, who challenged Mark Medford for the District 3 School Board seat in the Nov. 3 election.
In an interview with WYDaily on election night, Myatt said he would request a recount as a gesture to his supporters.
Once the recount begins, Walt Latham, the county voter registrar, said it should not take as long to complete as the 2013 Virginia attorney general recount, which went on for two days before the petitioner called off the count.
The Virginia Department of Elections shows George holds the lead with 1,018 votes, while Myatt has 1,017 votes. District 5 has 8,297 registered voters.
