Overnight Lane Closures on I-64 to Begin Earlier

I64 wideningOvernight lane closures continue this week as part of the construction for the Interstate 64 widening, with work beginning an hour earlier than usual.

The Virginia Department of Transportation began the weekly single-lane closures in September. Starting last night, the closures begin at 8 p.m. this week. Previously, the work began at 9 p.m.

Crews will be conducting paving operations in both directions of I-64 between Lee Hall (exit 247) and Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) each night through Friday morning. The work will shut down one lane of traffic and will end no later than 5 a.m. each day through Friday.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews will be conducting paving operations related to the widening.

VDOT said the work is dependent upon the weather.

The first phase of the widening project – projected to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction for the 5.6 miles between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and Route 143 in York County (exit 247).

The first phase is slated for completion in December 2017.

The entire I-64 widening, which will happen in three phases, will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (exit 234).

VDOT maintains a page on its website with updated information on the widening.
