Candidates for the James City County Board of Supervisors pitched their platforms to residents Thursday night in the same room they hope to serve as elected officials representing the Berkeley, Roberts and Stonehouse districts.

More than 60 people came out to the board room of the county government center to hear why they should cast their ballots for Mary Jones or Ruth Larson in the Berkeley District, Heather Cordasco or John McGlennon in the Roberts District, and Jim Kennedy or Sue Sadler in the Stonehouse district.

Each candidate gave a five-minute speech, then mingled with residents during a meet-and-greet in the lobby. The event was originally organized by the League of Women Voters of the Williamsburg Area as a debate, but after Republican candidates Jones, Cordasco and Sadler chose not to attend, the League changed the format to a meet-and-greet.

Brent Weiss, a resident in the Roberts District, said Cordasco and McGlennon were both interesting to listen to and offered good talking points about the county’s branding and action on new schools.

“It’s going to be a tough decision when I walk into the poll to vote because they’re both solid candidates,” Weiss said.

Although Barbara Henry, a resident who lives in the Jamestown District, cannot vote for the candidates, she said she supports the common-sense approach of Jones, Cordasco and Sadler.

“They’re on the board. It affects me,” Henry said. “All the board members make decisions.”

Residents can see candidates go head-to-head with their district opponent in a debate Oct. 21 at Legacy Hall in New Town.
