A backhoe struck and splintered a utility pole on Richmond Road in Lightfoot, causing a road hazard.

The incident, which occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes, caused power lines to fall too far down across all four lanes of Richmond Road to allow traffic to cross, Deputy Chief Steve Rubino said.

Vehicles are being detoured around the intersection of Lightfoot and Richmond roads, with westbound drivers using the Exxon parking lot and eastbound drivers using the McDonald’s parking lot to maneuver around the hazard, Rubino said.

The Virginia Department of Transportation placed traffic barrels to mark the detour.

The detour is expected to be in place for up to four hours, Rubino said.

Dominion Virginia Power is on scene to replace the pole.
