This Week in Crime: $5,000 Reward Offered in Hardee’s Robbery Case

Toano Gas Station Robbery Suspect Pleads Guilty

Donte Devon Nelson of York County has pleaded guilty to robbing a Toano gas station clerks last winter.

Nelson, who entered his plea at Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court on Thursday, was arrested with three other men in connection with the Dec. 29 robbery at the Star Express convenience store on Old Stage Road in Toano.

Nelson and Dijon Boyd were accused of entering the Star Express and holding two employees at gunpoint before forcing them into a freezer. Police said two other men – Dominnic Christian, who pleaded guilty, and another who had charges against him dropped – waited in the getaway car outside.

The trial date for Boyd, who has not yet entered a plea, will be determined Wednesday.

Nelson originally faced seven charges, but four were dropped at his preliminary hearing in April. After originally pleading not guilty to the three remaining charges, he accepted a deal that dropped the felony abduction charge in exchange for a guilty plea on the robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony charges.

Judge Michael McGinty accepted the guilty pleas. Nelson’s sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 21.

Third Suspect in Vineyards Car Break-Ins Arrested

A third person has been arrested in the three car break-ins in the Vineyards subdivision that occurred in April.

Taylor Ruby Byrd, 20, of James City County, was arrested Sept. 4 for her part in taking credit cards, clothes, more than $6,000 in camera equipment, and other electronics from three cars in the neighborhood off Lake Powell Road.

Two others – 19-year-old Micayla Osborn and 19-year-old Aidan Feldman – were arrested in connection with the break-ins in May.

Suspects in Vineyards Car Break-Ins Arrested

The stolen credit cards were used at various stores in the area to buy food, gas and cigarettes, according to a James City County Police report. Two women and a man are shown in security footage using one of the stolen cards at a nearby business.

In the footage, one of the women is wearing a black leather jacket similar to one reported as stolen during the car break-ins and the man is wearing a blue sport jacket similar to one reported as stolen.

The people in the footage were later identified as Byrd, Osborn and Feldman, all of whom have been charged with one count of credit card theft, two charges of grand larceny and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony.

Man Arrested for Check Fraud

A 24-year-old man from Drewryville faces check fraud charges in James City County.

Walter Lawrence Fender was arrested Sept. 3 after he was accused of cashing a forged check from a business.

Fender cashed a $2,477.18 check at one bank, but one of the managers became suspicious when he attempted to cash another check at a branch in the City of Williamsburg, according to the James City County Police report.

The bank contacted the owner of the business from which the check was written, who reported the check had been forged, police said.

Fender faces three felony charges: uttery, forgery and obtaining money by false pretenses.

$5,000 Reward Offered in Hardee’s Robbery Case

The parent company of Hardee’s is offering a reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to an arrest in the robbery of its Second Street restaurant.

Bodde-Noell Enterprises is offering a $5,000 reward to help find the person who robbed the Second Street Hardee’s on Sept. 7.

A man, armed with a box cutter, entered the Hardee’s around 5:29 a.m. Labor Day, forced employees to open the safe, then fled with an undisclosed amount of money, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies said.

Investigators said it is likely the same man was behind a robbery of the same restaurant in August. Newport News Police have also connected the suspect to a robbery at Burger King on Sept. 7.

Public Asked to Help Identify Suspected Meat Thieves

Two men are suspected of taking hundreds of dollars worth of meat from Walmart, deputies said.

The suspects, pictured above, left the store on the 2600 block of George Washington Memorial Highway on Aug. 26 without paying for $226 in meat.

YPSO Looking for Suspected Wallet Thief

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said the wallet was taken from the counter of the Wawa located on the 800 block of Merrimac Trail around 10:30 p.m. Sept. 6.

He is described as having a medium build and wearing black pants and a light-colored camo shirt during the incident.
