Two children were in a York County home when their mother was shot and killed, deputies said.
York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call regarding a shooting in the 200 block of Wichita Lane in York County around 12:44 a.m. Sunday.
Deputies arrived at the scene to find Katherine A. Freel, a 27-year-old woman, was fatally shot inside her home with a semi-automatic handgun.
Her husband, 26-year-old Mark A. Freel Jr., has been charged with second-degree murder and felony use of a firearm, according to a news releases posted to the YPSO Facebook page.
He was arrested at the home without incident, deputies said.
Freel lived at the residence with her husband and their 4-year-old and 5-month-old children.
The children were in the residence at the time of the shooting, but were unharmed. They have both been placed in the care of their mother’s family.
Mark Freel is being held without bond at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
YPSO Lt. Dennis Ivey said the incident was likely the result of an argument between the husband and wife.
“Everybody’s life is ruined. It’s sad,” Ivey said. “The lady’s life is lost, the husband is now facing jail time, and you’ve got two kids that are affected.”
