While their private school colleagues headed back to the classroom last week, public school students in the Historic Triangle are preparing for their own return to school.
Both Williamsburg-James City County Schools and the York County School Division kick off the 2015-2016 school year Sept. 8.
Virginia state law prohibits public schools from convening classes before Labor Day.
A number of school-related activities are being planned in both school divisions prior to the Sept. 8 first day of school.
WJCC will hold three open house nights for parents and students this week. The high school open house will be first, and is scheduled for today. The middle school event will be held Wednesday, and the elementary event will be held Thursday.
Each open house will be held at the individual school building, and each event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
YCSD will also host a series of open houses for each school Sept. 1 through 3. The school division has posted a full list of the events with dates and times for each school on its website, available here.
The school boards for the two divisions are also preparing for their first meetings of the 2015-2016 school year.
The WJCC School Board will hold a work session at 6:30 p.m. today. Its first regular meeting of the new school year will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15.
The YCSD School Board will meet for a work session at 6 p.m. Sept. 14, and will hold its first regular meeting of the school year at 7 p.m. Sept. 28.
