Locals interested in learning how to safely operate a firearm will have opportunities in August and September to take a free class offered by the James City County Police Department.

The one-session class, which will be held Aug. 11 and Sept. 9 at the Law Enforcement Center, will teach firearms basics.

Included in the course description is information about handling and storage in addition to laws related to owning and carrying a handgun in Virginia.

The classes were made possible by a grants from the National Rifle Association Foundations and Project ChildSafe, which were used to purchase class materials and gunlocks for the class.

Participants should be aware that the classes are not hands-on and will not include the handling of actual firearms, so personal weapons should be left at home.

Participation in the class is free but preregistration is required due to limited class size. Upon completion of the class each attendee will receive a certificate of attendance.

To register, contact Master Officer Alan McDowell at 757-603-6026.
