James City County Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash

A 47-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash Friday night in Lanexa.

James Terrell Cowles, of James City County, died after being ejected from a 2000 Plymouth Neon that was traveling east on Richmond Road around 8 p.m. “at a high rate of speed,” according to a news release from James City County Police.

Another man in the car, who is from New Kent, was also ejected and has been transported to MCV Hospital in Richmond with serious injuries.

Both men were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, police said.

The preliminary investigation indicates the driver lost control of the car just east of the New Kent County border on the 9500 block of Richmond Road, causing it to run off the right side of the road and into a tree.

It is unclear which man was driving the car. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, and the investigation continues, police said.
