The Peninsula Health District is warning York County citizens of a cat that tested positive for the rabies virus.
Lois Gary with the Peninsula Health District said the cat, which was described as black, juvenile, female and feral, was found in the area of the one hundred block of Old Railway Road in Yorktown off Dare Road.
Anyone with information regarding any exposure to the animal, including bites, scratches or contact with saliva is asked to call 757-594-7340.
Gary said the local office of Environmental Health Services will be reaching out to immediate neighbors as well as civic and homeowner’s associations in the community to alert them of the rabid animal.
If you suspect your pet has been in contact with the cat, Gary urges to report to your doctor and the local health department.
Citizens are encouraged to enjoy wildlife from a distance, not feed or encourage wild animals such as coyotes, raccoons, skunks, foxes and other feral animals to visit your premises and vaccinate all pets pets.
