JCC to Offer Citizens Police Academy

JCCPolice PatchJames City County is now accepting registrations for the latest edition of its popular Citizens Police Academy, a 14-week survey offering insight into how police officers do their job.

The free class runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, starting Aug. 26 and ending Dec 9. It is open to adults living or working in James City County, according to a county news release.

The class explores the department’s philosophy of policing. It examines police practices, including polygraph testing, traffic stops, DUI enforcement, handgun safety, internal affairs, building searches and officer survival.

Students taking the class also get hands-on opportunities to conduct a nighttime building search, go on a ride along, fire weapons at a shooting range and tour the county’s Emergency Operations Center.

The class is offered twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Most of the classes are held at the Law Enforcement Center, located at 4600 Opportunity Way. One class is held on Saturday at a firing range.

Anyone interested in registering must undergo a criminal background check before the class starts.

To sign up for the class, contact Officer Monique Marchand at monique.marchand@jamescitycountyva.gov or call 603-6054.
