Heavy rainfall in the past week has made the grounds at Endview Plantation unfit to use for parking for visitors coming to Yorktown for the arrival of the French tall ship Hermione.

Because Endview Plantation’s grounds are now too saturated for parking, visitors are encouraged to park at the York County Sports Complex, located at 412 Sports Way, off George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17).

Originally, Endview Plantation in Newport News was selected as an overflow parking area to accommodate the thousands of guests who are expected to flock to Yorktown to see the ship’s arrival.

Because it is a workday, the county’s larger parking lots, such as those at the Administration Building and the courthouse, will be occupied for normal county business and therefore unavailable for special event parking.

The county planned to alleviate this problem by contracting a shuttle service to bus guests back and forth between Endview Plantation for Friday only.

The Sports Complex lot will open at 7 a.m. and bus transport will be available from the Sports Complex to the Yorktown Victory Center up until 2 p.m., and from the Victory Center back to the Sports Complex until 6:30 p.m.

From the Victory Center, it is a .6-mile walk to Riverwalk Landing, where most of the festivities are taking place. Event planners warn there is a steep hill on the route to/from the Victory Center that some guests may find challenging, but the Yorktown Trolley will be in operation and covering that route until 5 p.m.

Parking at the Sports Complex will only be available Friday, and visitors are cautioned that it will be limited. On Saturday and Sunday, parking will be available at all public parking lots in Yorktown.

Parking on the battlefields is not permitted at this event.
