York County is looking for volunteers who are at least 18 years old to help make the three-day visit of the French tall ship Hermione a success.
The 18th-century replica frigate carried the Marquis de Lafayette to the New World in 1780, dropping him off in Boston before settling in the Chesapeake Bay, aiding the allied forces to overcome the British troops by October 1781.
The ship is on its way to Yorktown and will arrive June 5, staying for three days before making its way up to several ports along the East Coast.
While the ship is anchored, myriad activities, exhibits, re-enactments and ceremonies will take place on the Yorktown Waterfront, requiring hundreds of volunteers to help with the coordination of the visit.
Volunteers needed include:
- Parking Lot Monitors – Responsible for assisting visitors and monitoring available spaces in the lot and keeping traffic flowing throughout Historic Yorktown.
- Ticket Distributors – Responsible for issuing timed tickets for the free public deck tours of the Hermione and Jamestown Settlement’s Godspeed.
- Ticket Line Monitors – Responsible for assisting with the queueing of visitors waiting to board the Hermione and Jamestown Settlement’s Godspeed for the free public deck tours.
- Information/Translators – Responsible for assisting French speaking guests visiting the area that weekend.
Each volunteer who completes a shift will be guaranteed a ticket to tour the Hermione and Jamestown Settlement’s Godspeed.
Volunteers can sign up for full-day shifts from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. or half-day shifts from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 1 to 7 p.m. on all three days.
Volunteer coordinator Minnie Sippio said there are currently about 75 volunteers signed up to help with the ship’s arrival.
