A portion of the road on Powhatan Secondary off Monticello Avenue in James City County is closed until further notice due to a failure in the draining system.

James City County Fire Chief Tal Luton said the water from Rennicks Pond is draining underneath the dam, creating instability on the section of Powhatan Secondary between Wind River Run and Water’s Edge.

A preliminary inspection shows a failure in the stand pipe for the main pond drainage system, Powhatan Community Services Association Manager C.J. Jones said in an email to residents. The water from Rennicks Pond is therefore draining into the two smaller ponds, causing a higher level of water in the small ponds.

PCSA is in contact with an engineering firm and a contractor, who will complete an analysis on the dam structure, Jones said.

PCSA has suspended all water-related activities in the pond until further notice.

Luton said the Virginia Department of Transportation, who manages the road next to the pond, will likely be engineering a study on the road to look for any instabilities that may be related to the drainage failure.

The road will be closed until further notice, and detours are in place. Entry onto Wind River Run is accessible through News Road off Monticello Avenue.
