Virginia’s annual back-to-school sales tax-free weekend begins Friday.
For the ninth consecutive year, purchases of certain clothing items, shoes and school and office supplies will be exempt from sales taxes. The tax holiday will run from Aug. 1 through 3.
Tax-exempt items include pens, pencils, loose-leaf ruled notebook paper, scissors, binders, backpacks, construction paper, sneakers, hats, shirts, dresses, jeans, bathing suits, diapers, and T-shirts, among other items.
A full list of tax-exempt items is available at the Department of Taxation’s Sales Tax Holiday Information Center.
Certain restrictions apply for items purchased during the holiday to qualify for the exemption. School and office supplies that cost $20 or less each, along with clothing and shoes priced at $100 or less each will be exempt from the 6 percent sales tax levied in the City of Williamsburg, and James City and York counties.
Online purchases of exempt items also qualify for tax-free status.
Many back-to-school items qualify for the sales tax-exemption. The lists of York County School Division elementary and middle school supplies can be found here. Williamsburg-James City County school supply lists can be found at the respective elementary and middle schools’ websites.
