A 36-year-old Shacklefords man is accused of stealing $4,000 worth of tools from a construction equipment dealer in James City County.

Raymond A. Hall Jr. was arrested July 17 after the manager of Carter Machinery on Green Mount Parkway reported Hall took tools from the Caterpillar dealer Jan. 31.

Deputy Chief Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department said after receiving the report, investigators tracked the suspect’s footprints in the snow for an undisclosed amount of time and came across a blue stocking hat.

The hat was sent to the Department of Forensic Science’s Central Laboratory in Richmond for DNA testing, and the DNA on the hat matched Hall’s DNA, Rubino said.

The report alleges Hall either climbed over or slipped under a fence surrounding the property then took various tools from work trucks on the property.

Hall is charged with one felony count of grand larceny.
