Man Jailed After Leading Police on High-Speed Chase

A 23-year-old man was arrested Friday after leading police on a high-speed chase along Route 199 and Monticello Avenue. The chase ended when his 1996 Yamaha motorcycle crashed near Green Springs Plantation, said Major Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department.

Steven James Slater, the driver of the motorcycle, was not hurt in the crash. Rubino said Slater was traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph and weaving through traffic and passing on the shoulder along the Southbound lanes of Route 199 around 1:20 p.m. Slater did not stop when an officer began pursuit. Rubino said Slater took the Monticello Avenue exit and drove west on Monticello Avenue until he crashed in a ditch.

Rubino said Slater was charged with one count of felony evade and elude, two counts of reckless driving and four other traffic infractions. Slater is being held on $5,000 bond at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
