Newport News Police Detective Charged With DUI

Kevin B. Nichol, a 28-year-old detective with the Newport News Police Department, was charged with DUI, refusal to take a breath test and following too closely after a two-vehicle crash in James City County Saturday night.

James City County police said Nichol was driving a 2012 Jeep when he collided with a 1995 Ford Explorer that was braking. The accident, which occurred at 11:48 p.m., took place along the 5000 block of Longhill Road, near the intersection with Route 199. The driver of the Ford, a 46-year-old man, was transported to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for minor injuries, said Major Stephen Rubino, Investigation Division Commander for the James City County Police Department.

Rubino said Nichol was not cooperative with officers at the scene. Nichol was jailed at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail until he was released Sunday afternoon.

Nichol has worked for the Newport News Police Department since January 2008. He is assigned to the Special Victims Unit and has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending an internal investigation, according to a statement from the Newport News Police Department.
