A fox found in the 100 block of Woods Course Drive in Kingsmill has tested positive for rabies.
Anyone having information about exposure to the animal (bite, scratch or contact with saliva by open wound or eyes, nose and/or mouth) is asked to contact the Williamsburg Health Department at (757) 253-4813. Exposures also include direct contact between pets and the rabid animal. After hours, contact Animal Control at (757) 565-0370.
Rabies is a fatal, but preventable, disease that has been carried by wild animals on the Peninsula since the mid-1980s.
The local office of Environmental Health Services will be contacting the immediate neighbors, as well as the homeowner’s association.
To prevent rabies exposures, vaccinate pets, report all exposures to the local health department and enjoy wildlife from a distance.
