WJCC SB Appoints Toano Leaders

Toano Middle School will be led by a new principal and assistant principal when school starts on Sept. 4.

The Williamsburg-James City County School Board approved the appointment Tuesday of Tracey Jones as principal and Michael Hurley as assistant principal.

Jones, who has served as the assistant principal at Toano for two years, started her career in WJCC schools in 1999 as a middle school history teacher. She has also served as a site-based summer school facilitator and as a summer school principal. From 1993 to 1999, she taught third, fourth and fifth grade in York County schools. She received her bachelor’s degree from Longwood University and her master’s of education in administration and supervision from The College of William & Mary.

Hurley has served as assistant principal at Matoaka Elementary School for the past two years. He previously taught math at Matoaka and Matthew Whaley elementary schools, and also has served as a math curriculum leader and team leader and summer school administrator.

Hurley received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Christopher Newport University and his master’s degree in Educational Curriculum and Instruction from the College of William & Mary. He also earned a post-master’s certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Hurley is also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving seven years in the transportation field at several Virginia posts. He was awarded the U.S. Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal. After leaving the Army, he served two years with the Safehaven Shelter for Abused Children in Newport News and was a program director with the departments of parks and recreation in Newport News and Poquoson, from 1987 to 1991.
