City Council Denies Rezoning for Residential Community on Penniman Road

WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg City Council denied rezoning and a special use permit for a proposed residential community of 152 apartments and 50 townhouses along Penniman Road at its Feb. 8 meeting.

The council voted four to one to deny the rezoning and a special use permit request to construct multifamily apartments and townhouses requested by Platinum Management, LLC. The community called for a total of 232 units, on property originally targeted for timeshares.

“I like the project to address a critical need of housing that we have,” said Council Member Barbara L. Ramsey. “But I can’t separate this project from what’s around it which gives me pause.”

“Even though I can’t support this project I do hope that the applicant will consider Williamsburg for something else down the road,” Ramsey added.

Staff had recommended the denial of the rezoning and special use permit. Planning Commission had recommended the Rezoning but not the special use permit.

Several members of the community came forward at that time, and at the Feb. 8 meeting, with concerns regarding the proposal.

The full meeting and discussion can be found on the City of Williamsburg webpage. The next city council meeting will be held on Mar. 14.
