Yorktown Woman’s Club Awards Scholarships

The Yorktown Woman’s Club scholarship program raised over $7,000 for scholarships for three students — one from Tabb High School and two from Grafton High School.  The organization’s Education Committee received the applications and chose the eligible students. The May 2024 Scholarship Award and Officer’s Installation Luncheon was held at Al Fresca’s Restaurant in Newport News.

York High Alumni Association Scholarship Winners and Awards Announced

A total of $6,000 in scholarships were awarded on May 30 at York High School’s Awards Night. The 2024 Scholarship recipients were Bryleigh Geary (James Madison University), Matthew Hale (Virginia Tech) and Annabelle Lee (William and Mary).

At the 50th Anniversary “Golden Jubilee” celebration in 2004, the York High School Alumni Association was formed as a charitable organization, with the purpose of raising higher education scholarship funds for York High School graduates. The organization holds Spring and Fall YHS Alumni “Mixers” open to all classes at the Yorktown Beach Freight Shed venue with live band music and dancing, raising scholarship funds through ticket sales, 50/50 raffles and food and beverage sales, as well as donors and sponsors, to raise scholarship funds.

2024 marks the 70th Anniversary of York High School. The organization thanked all of its supporters and sponsors of its events.

Peninsula Chinese American Association Honors Seven Local High School Graduates

Peninsula Chinese American Association recently awarded its 2024 scholarship to seven local high school seniors for their academic excellence, citizenship performance, extracurricular achievements, and community services to their community.

The recipients are:

  1. Aaron Lin, son of Guang Wu Lin and Jing Jing Xiao, and the Valedictorian of Woodside High School class 2024, will attend Yale University to study Economics and Politics. He has been named the 2024 Gates Scholar by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and is the recipient of Virginia Elks Association Scholarship. He is also selected for Bank of America Student Leaders Program, and as a political Intern for Virginia House of Delegate Shelly Simons. He is a member of the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra and the Captain of Archery Club (NN).
  2. Janie Qing, daughter of Hua Qing and Yu Guang, and the Valedictorian of Tabb High School class 2024, will attend Duke University to study Biomedical Engineering. She is the recipient of Princeton Book Award, National Merit Scholarship, and Kidwind Wind Engineering Challenge World Champion. She is also an AP Scholar with Distinction, and the President of Mu Alpha Theta at Tabb High School.
  3. Leo Feng, son of Bintao Feng and Ligeng Tian, and ranked 1 st place of the 50 graduates of Hampton Roads Academy class 2024, will attend Princeton University to study Chemistry. He is the recipient of Princeton book Award, and the President of Mu Alpha Theta at Hampton Roads Academy. He is also a member of the Team USA International Fencer and ranked top 10 Fencers for his age group nationally.
  4. Hannah Hong, daughter of Gany Hong and Yu Zhang, and a senior with a 4.76 GPA at Grafton High School class 2024, will attend Stanford University to study Arts and Humanities. She has been named U.S. Presidential Scholar in Arts, and is a 2024 YoungArts National Winner in Visual Arts. She is also a two times National Congressional Art Competition winner, a Scholastic Art & Writing National Gold Medal recipient, and the Special Projects Leader for York County Youth Commission.
  5. Ian Zhang, son of Jixie Zhang and Ruicui Liu, and a senior with a 4.71 GPA at Grafton High School class 2024, will attend University of Virginia to study Computer Science. He is an American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) Qualifier, and the President of Grafton High School Chess Club. He also received Williamsburg Music Teachers Association Grant-in-aid 2nd prize and Mary Smart State Piano competition 2nd place.
  6. Hannah Chen, daughter of Lin Chen and Yanhua Feng, and the Salutatorian of Grafton High School class 2024, will attend University of Virginia to study Computer Engineering. She is Virginia Stockholm Junior Water Prize Winner 1st Place & Top 50 USA Stockholm Junior Water Prize National Finalist. She is also a National Merit Scholar, an AP Scholar with Distinction, VHSL Swimming Championship Finalist, and has been named Virginia High School League Public Forum Debate Champion 1st Place twice.
  7. Keagan Clark, son of Robert Clark and Lianhong Liu, and a senior with a 4.29 GPA at Grafton High School class 2024, will attend Virginia Tech to study Economics. He is a member of National Honor Society, a Varsity Track Runner, and a national level fencer. He does volunteer work at THRIVE Peninsula and American Red Cross at Langley Air Force Base.

Peninsula Chinese American Association is a non-profit organization which was
established over 40 years ago to share Chinese culture in the community, and to
oversee a Chinese Language School on Peninsula.
