WILLIAMSBURG — A decision on the Superintendent’s Proposed FY25-34 Capital Improvement Plan, presented to the James City County Board of Supervisors and Williamsburg City Council on Dec. 1, is scheduled to be made at the Williamsburg-James City County School Board’s Dec. 12 meeting.
WJCC Schools shared the need for investment in FY25 to support the construction of two centers to serve 500 prekindergarten students in the community.
“WJCC Schools presented the Superintendent’s proposed Capital Improvement Plan to the city council and board of supervisors. The school board will consider and take action on the CIP during its Dec. 12 meeting. If adopted, the CIP will be formally transmitted to the city and county for consideration,” explained Kara Wall, Strategic Communications Officer at Williamsburg-James City County Schools.
The proposed pre-kindergarten centers will be designed specifically with pre-K students in mind.
“For example, the scale of the buildings — having lower windows so students can see outdoors at their level, and having textures and features on building surfaces so students can interact with the building itself,” Wall said. “Beyond physical accessibility, the centers will accommodate students with sensory needs, like having neutral palettes, adjusted lighting, and friendly acoustics.”
The goal of the new centers is to alleviate overcrowding in existing elementary schools, while also providing dedicated space for pre-K students. The division currently has 13 learning cottages, or trailers, to accommodate 26 classes that do not fit within the division’s nine elementary schools.
The Dec. 12 meeting will be held in Room 300 of the Annex at the School Board & Central Office building located at 117 Ironbound Rd. in Williamsburg at 4:30 p.m.
