York County School Board Selects New Retreat Date

York County School Board (YCSD)

YORKTOWN— After an original date was canceled, a new school board retreat date of May 31 was selected at the May 20 York County School Board meeting.

Due to the training being provided by School Board Member Alliance (SBMA), school board members James Richardson and Mark Shafer will not be in attendance.

Richardson, who sits on the board for Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) recused himself from the retreat.

Shafer also declined to attend because he “does not want the citizens of York County to see him as aligning with the SBMA.”

During the vote to adopt the new date and agenda, Richardson abstained while Shafer voted no. Zoran Pajevic, Kim Goodwin, and Lynda Fairman all voted yes.

The retreat will take place at the York-Poqouson Sheriff’s Office from 8:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m. The agenda for the retreat can be found on YCSD’s website. To watch the full meeting from May 20, visit the YCSD YouTube channel.

The next meeting of the York County School Division will be June 10 at 4:30 p.m. at York Hall.

CORRECTION — A previous version of this article paraphrased Richardson’s reason for recusing himself from the retreat, inaccurately implying there was litigation between the School Board Member Alliance and Virginia School Board Association. The quote has been added in full to clarify his reason. The School Board Member Alliance notes it has no involvement in the lawsuit against the Virginia School Board Association.
