JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS — Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE) partnered with Tidewater Integrated Combat Symposium (TWICS) and the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) to foster Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education among local youth Wednesday, May 8.
The event, held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center (HRCC), welcomed sixth to eighth grade students for hands-on activities and career exploration.
“Our nation’s military has some of the most challenging and exciting technical problems and it’s our job to inspire the best and brightest minds across our nation to help us meet those challenges,” said Col. Matthew Altman, JBLE installation commander. “In today’s rapidly evolving world, these disciplines form the cornerstone of innovation and progress. They ignite curiosity, inspire creativity and cultivate the critical thinking skills essential for tackling the challenges of tomorrow.”
Approximately 700 students from six schools explored cutting-edge technology and delved into potential career pathways within the Department of Defense, according to 633d Air Base Wing Public Affairs.
The STEM Day event had dozens of booths, showcasing the real-world application of STEM disciplines Airmen and Soldiers at JBLE encounter every day, it added. The students were on a rotating schedule, allowing the students to immerse themselves in the experience.
“We are thrilled to have provided this immersive experience for local students,” said Ms. Terrilyn Williams, JBLE school liaison program manager. “STEM education is critical for preparing the next generation of leaders and innovators. By partnering with AFCEA Tidewater Chapter and NDIA Greater Hampton Roads Chapter, we were able to offer students a glimpse into the exciting world of STEM and inspire their future aspirations.”
