WILLIAMSBURG — Jamestown Settlement will present “History & Cosplay: A Match Made in Imagination” on Aug. 10.
The evening event will spotlight the convergence of historical and futuristic fashion and design, according to the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.
According to the foundation, the event is inspired by the ongoing “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design” special exhibition. Guests ages 14 and older are invited to dress in their own costumes and clothing creations, whether influenced by history, sci-fi, Afrofuturism, superheroes or make-believe. The evening will conclude with a costume parade and a top prize for the audience favorite.
Costumer and cosplay artist Shasta Schatz, who specializes in historical clothing and construction techniques used to apply to pop culture and cosplay interpretations, will share her inspirations and adventures as a maker of historically (and futuristically) accurate attire, it added.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation by Schatz, followed by a reception with light hors d’oeuvres, refreshments, a cash bar, and access to the “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design” special exhibition.
The event is ticketed with limited availability. Tickets are $10 per person with advance registration at jyfmuseums.org/events/special-exhibits/history-and-cosplay.
