WILLIAMSBURG− Eleva Coffee Lounge in Williamsburg will be hosting its first meeting for its chess club on June 18.
The coffee lounge celebrated its grand opening in Colonial Williamsburg on Saturday, June 8 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Eleva’s coffee comes from farms in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Ecuador. Owners Amr and Sue Hassan told the Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce that as they travel, they always taste other countries’ coffees. Now look forward to sharing that experience with the community.
The chess club idea was born from the passion of Sue Hassan’s brother, Ted Martin. In addition to heading the chess club, he also manages the lounge.
“Chess requires a great deal of creativity and imagination. To come up with winning strategies, players must think outside the box and be able to envision different scenarios and outcomes. This type of thinking can translate into other areas of life, helping players to become more creative problem solvers,” Martin said.
Eleva hopes that demand will allow the club to meet weekly. Currently, the club is not formalized, but the hope is to eventually go that route if it builds enough interest. The format is set up as a Swiss system tournament so that if players lose, they still have the opportunity to play others.
The event is slated for June 18 from 6-8 p.m. Registration is $10 and can be completed online via Eventbrite. Registration is also available at the coffee lounge and players can pay the night of the event. Players are encouraged to bring a chess set, but it is not required.
