WILLIAMSBURG — One Book One Community, an initiative that encourages a shared reading experience related to a socially relevant book, kicks off at Williamsburg Regional Library on March 11.

The library, with support from the Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library Foundation and William & Mary Libraries, is hosting the program through March.

The 2024 book selection is “The Displacements” by Bruce Holsinger.

One Book One Community events throughout March will include book discussions, lectures, and other activities and events related to the book’s theme, with a special visit from Holsinger on March 20.

“‘The Displacements’ is a suspenseful story that offers a chance for readers to reflect on the causes and ramifications of intensifying extreme weather events on society,” said Williamsburg Regional Library Interim Director Sandy Towers. “We hope this novel will spark thoughtful discussions on how we can care for our community now and into the future.”

Holsinger, a professor at the University of Virginia, has published four books, including “The Displacements,” “The Gifted School,” and several nonfiction works. His books have been recognized with the Colorado Book Award, the John Hurt Fisher Prize, the Philip Brett Award, the John Nicholas Brown Prize, the Modern Language Association’s Prize for a First Book, and others.

He has also written for The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and other publications and has been interviewed on NPR’s Weekend Edition, Here & Now, and Marketplace. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.
