WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg Area Association of REALTORS is organizing a one-mile fun run and a 5k walk/run on Aug. 19 to help raise money to benefit Habitat for Humanity.
The Raising The Roof 5K Run/Walk event is a Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix event on a USATF-certified 5K course.
Once participants cross the finish line, a Community Day filled with activities and entertainment, as well as talks about home ownership, is open to all.
Williamsburg REALTORS notes that this event is not just about running and walking; it’s about coming together as a community with a shared purpose: to tackle the pressing issue of affordable housing in the Greater Williamsburg Area.
“The proceeds of the WAAR 5K Run and Community event will benefit a future homeowner by ‘Raising the Roof’ on a Habitat For Humanity Home for a local Williamsburg resident,” said Cindy Homewood, Chief Staff Executive of the Williamsburg Area Association of REALTORS.
“We believe that everyone should have a healthy affordable place to call home which also helps build a better community. REALTORS strives to ensure all Americans have the opportunity to achieve homeownership, the centerpiece of the American Dream and the pathway to economic well-being and intergenerational wealth-building,” she continued.
Williamsburg REALTORS has committed to raising $110,000 in an effort to build an affordable home in James City County. Between last year and this year, the group has raised a cumulative $29,000, it said. Its Community Engagement Committee is working on a number of fundraising projects this year in an effort to reach its goal.
The event will be at Billsburg Brewery on Aug. 19. Early registration for race participants has opened and will be through Aug. 4 and receive a free t-shirt. Registration will be open until Aug. 19.
