WILLIAMSBURG — The Reves Center for International Studies has announced that Erika Fabian will be the first Reves Artist-in-Residence of the Ampersand International Arts Festival.
Fabian will deliver a talk, “Surviving Hitler and Stalin: One Woman’s Account,” on Friday, Mar. 3.
Fabian was born in Hungry and is a photojournalist, author, playwright, and actor. According to the Reves Center, she was four years old when the Nazis invaded. Fabian’s father was sent to a prison camp, never to return.
Fabian, her seven-year-old sister, and her mother managed to survive, thanks to their resilience and friends and strangers who risked their own lives to help. After the war, the family’s troubles did not end, as Hungary was under a Stalinist regime. The three tried to escape to the West but were captured and imprisoned at the border. They ultimately escaped to Austria and then to the U.S. after the 1956 uprising.
In addition to giving her talk on her experiences, Fabian will be leading a workshop on Saturday, March 4 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ford Classroom of the Reeder Media Center in Swem Library. The workshop, “How to Get Your Book Published,” will cover the world of book publishing, from seeking an agent and publisher to self-publishing and marketing.
Fabian’s 26th book, “Liars’ Paradise,” is available online and in paperback. It is an autobiographical novel about love and survival under Nazi occupation and Communist dictatorship in Hungary.
Both events are free and open to the public. Fabian’s”Surviving Hitler and Stalin: One Woman’s Account” will take place at 5 p.m. in the Reves Room of the Reves Center. While the event is free, seating is limited.
