WILLIAMSBURG — Grab a pack of “ghoul” friends or bring the family to Broadway Dance Arts (BDA) Monster Bash variety show on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The show, which starts at 3 pm at the Williamsburg Regional Library, is slated to last 60 minutes. The show will include dance numbers, music performances, magic acts and more.
Originally started by former BDA owner, Shawn Blasingame, “Monster Bash” was a hit each halloween. Jasmine Tubach, current owner of BDA, is working hard to produce her first-ever crack at reviving the Halloween show.
“Monster Bash” has brought BDA teachers, students and community performers from Richmond, Newport News & Williamsburg together. We have cultivated a community among ourselves that is full of support & passion. We cannot wait to share what we have been brewing,” Tubach said.
She is hopeful to make the performance an annual October event.
“The purpose of the show was to bring BDA dancers AND community performers together. It is to share the ‘thrill’ of the arts with our community. We have brought in a handful of community performers not associated with the studio to showcase their talents. We want to show Williamsburg the arts is more than a recital, but truly complex and full of wonder,” Tubach said.
Performers in the show range from three years of age to adult. Numbers include “Bitty Bitty Bat”, “Scream”, “Thriller”, “Hocus Pocus 2”, “Ghostbusters”, “Weird Science”, “Calling All The Monsters”, “Boogie Wonderland”, and “Bang, Bang”.
Guest performers from the area include choreographer Corene Conners, magician Steve Mains, professional dancer Desmin Taylor and author and playwright Alex Vitale.
Kathy Lamb, who performs in four acts as a dancer and singer, and also as a singing vampire in “Smooth Operator,” is assisting with the show.
“I have loved dancing since I was a kid. When my husband and I moved to Williamsburg nine years ago, I wanted to find a dance studio where I could take lessons. It appeared that all the studios cater to kids. So I called them and asked them if they’d give me private lessons. They either said no or did not respond at all. Then Jasmine said yes,” Lamb said. So we started dance classes. When I asked if I could perform in her Christmas show (December 2022), she looked at me like I had two heads at first. And then she said yes! I love Halloween. I throw a production-type event Halloween party every year. So I was excited to help her with her Halloween show.”
Tubach is grateful for the community and Lamb’s support.
“Kathy has been a big help and big supporter to get this vision off the ground and gain traction. We are so thankful for her support as a choreographer, dancer, singer and visionary as we built the show and numbers together,” Tubach said.
Tubach’s studio has brought purpose to her life. After losing her husband and becoming a widow at the age of 27, the studio allowed her a place to channel her passions.
“The studio, Broadway Dance Arts and my Alternative preschool, KéKAY have both given me so much purpose since becoming a widow at 27. I am able to pour into others, encourage them and share my passion for dance as well as provide high-quality child care with our move and learn alternative preschool,” Tubach said.
