WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary’s Department of Theatre, Speech and Dance will present “An Evening of Dance,” performed by the Orchesis Modern Dance Company, March 30 through April 2.
The final main stage dance concert of the season showcases the talents of W&M students in choreography, production and performance, according to William & Mary, and this year’s program will feature eight world premieres by eight student choreographers.
The following performances will be featured, according to the department:
- “Breaking Surface” — Choreographed by Allison Foley, a physical manifestation of the common, but recurring, process of settling into a new place or new relationship, transitioning from awkward, surface-level attachments to something profound and beautiful.
- “Mortal Coil” — Grace Cogley presents a simple, yet substantial, message: When we walk through this world alone our pain is amplified, but when we lean on those around us, we find peace.
- “Spoken, Heard, and Twisted” — Focuses on the questions: What happens when a rumor is started? How do stories change as they are spread through word of mouth? Choreographer Julia Mitchell concludes that once a story has been told, it may never be told the same way again.
- “Inherited Unrest” — Choreographed by Amanda Gill, it explores the tension between the unwillingness to let go, relinquishing control, and progressing forward. How do we know when to let go? How do we cope when failure is the only outcome?
- “Strings of Fate” — Choreographed by Cassidy Palomares, it leans into the connections between people that are destined to meet. Some of those people we’ll spend forever trying to catch, and others we’ll spend the rest of our lives trying to let go.
- “Onto the next…” — Co-choreographers Cameron Lynch and Amy Wolgin delve into the underlying feelings of uncertainty and doubt that accompany moving on to a new stage of life. Unexpected growth, confidence and new friendships spur from growing up.
- “Nothing Gold” — Choreographed and performed by Holly Stefanick. Based on Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” this piece demonstrates the acceptance of change. Emphasis is placed on the recollection of happy memories while embracing the unknown and what’s to come.
- “The Hands of Time” — The finale, also choreographed by Holly Stefanick, is performed by the entirety of Orchesis Modern Dance Company, and is about the struggles of growing up and the importance of a grounded support system. Through the trials and tribulations of life, people will find joy in unexpected places.
“An Evening of Dance” will be presented at Kimball Theatre March 30 through April 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for military and William & Mary staff, and $7 for students and children. Tickets are free for William & Mary students with a student ID.
Tickets can be purchased online or in person at Kimball Theatre, 428 W. Duke of Gloucester St., the day of each performance beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, noon on Saturday, and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
