VDOT’s Weekly Hampton Roads Lane Closures Report for May 26 to June 1

HAMPTON ROADS — VDOT’s list of full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and single-lane closures at the bridge-tunnels the week of May 26 to June 1.

VDOT said it will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia for holiday travel beginning noon, Friday, May 24 until noon, Tuesday, May 28.

Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.

Bridges and Tunnels

HRBT Expansion Project:

Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown Tunnels):

  • Go to Elizabeth River Tunnels for maintenance schedules on the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (U.S. 58) and MLK Expressway (Route 164).


I-64, Southside Widening, High Rise Bridge Expansion: 

I-64, Hampton: 

  • Brief, intermittent stoppages on I-64 in both directions from LaSalle Avenue (exit 265) and the Hampton River Bridge May 29-30 from midnight to 4 a.m.
  • Long-term, continuous single-lane closure on I-64 in both directions, reducing travel lanes from three to two lanes between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265), with I-64 west traffic shifted to the I-64 east lanes. View the full traffic alert.

I-64, Norfolk: 

  • Full closure of the on-ramps to I-64 east/west from Northampton Boulevard May 28-30 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Long-term, full-closure of the on-ramp to I-64 east from Tidewater Drive south, with new left turn at Thole Street to access to I-64 east.
  • Long-term traffic shift toward the inside median on I-64 in both directions between Tidewater Drive and Little Creek Road (exit 276)

I-64, Hampton Roads Express Lanes:  

Norfolk, Reversible Roadway: 

  • Full closure in both directions:
    • May 28-31 from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.
    • May 29-31 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Chesapeake/Norfolk/Virginia Beach: 

  • Express Lane closed eastbound at the Twin Bridges May 28 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Express Lane closed westbound at Great Bridge Boulevard (exit 292) May 29 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.


I-264, Virginia Beach:

  • Full closure of the on-ramp:
    • to I-264 east from Lynnhaven Parkway May 28 to June 1 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • to I-264 west from Birdneck Road May 28 to June 1 from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Full closure of the off-ramp:
    • from I-264 east to London Bridge Boulevard (exit 19C) May 28 to June 1 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • from I-264 east to First Colonial Road north/south (exit 21A/B) May 28 to June 1 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • from I-264 west to First Colonial Road (exit 21) May 28 to June 1 from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • from I-264 east to Birdneck Road (exit 22) May 28 to June 1 from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

I-264, Portsmouth:

  • Full closure of the on-ramp to I-264 west from Greenwood Drive May 30 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
