VDOT’s Weekly Hampton Roads Lane Closures Report for May 12-18

HAMPTON ROADS — VDOT’s list of full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and single-lane closures at the bridge-tunnels the week of May 12-18.

Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.

Bridges and Tunnels

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64:  

  • Full directional closure May 12 eastbound from 2-3 a.m. and westbound from 3-4 a.m. for routine tide gate testing. View the full traffic alert here. 
  • Single-lane closures eastbound May 13-16 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, I-664: 

  • Alternating, mobile, single-lane closures
    • in both directions May 13-16 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • southbound May 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Berkley Bridge, I-264:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures eastbound May 12 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Alternating, single-lane closures on I-464 north:
    • May 10-11 from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m.
    • May 12 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

James River Bridge, Route 17:

  • Single-lane closures southbound May 13-16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Alternating, mobile, single-lane closures northbound May 13 and May 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, Route 17:

  • Brief, intermittent test openings in both directions May 16 from 10-11:30 p.m.

Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown Tunnels): 

  • Go to Elizabeth River Tunnels for maintenance schedules on the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (U.S. 58) and MLK Expressway (Route 164).

I-64

I-64, Southside Widening, High Rise Bridge Expansion: 

I-64, Hampton: 

  • Brief, intermittent stoppages on I-64 in both directions between LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A) and the Hampton River Bridge May 14-17 from midnight to 4 a.m.
  • Long-term, continuous single-lane closure on I-64 in both directions, reducing travel lanes from three to two lanes between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A), with I-64 west traffic shifted to the I-64 east lanes. View the full traffic alert.

I-64, Norfolk: 

  • Full closure of the on-ramp to I-64 east/west from Northampton Boulevard May 13-16 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Long-term, full-closure of the on-ramp to I-64 east from Tidewater Drive south, with new left turn at Thole Street to access to I-64 east.
  • Long-term traffic shift toward the inside median on I-64 in both directions between Tidewater Drive and Little Creek Road (exit 276)
  • Long-term, continuous, single-lane closure on the I-64 west on-ramp to I-564 west
  • Long-term, shortened merge area at the northbound Tidewater Drive on-ramp to I-64 west. View the full traffic alert here.

I-64, Hampton Roads Express Lanes:  

Norfolk, Reversible Roadway: 

  • Full closure in both directions:
    • Consecutively from May 10 at 8 p.m. to May 12 at 8 a.m.
    • May 12 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.
    • May 13 from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.
    • May 13-17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Chesapeake/Norfolk/Virginia Beach: 

  • Express Lane closed eastbound between the I-264 and I-464 interchanges May 12-15 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Express Lane closed westbound between I-464 and the Twin Bridges May 14-17 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-264

I-264, Portsmouth: 

  • Full closure of the on-ramp to I-264 west from Greenwood Drive north May 12-16 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-464

I-464, Norfolk:

  • Full closure of the I-464 north on-/off-ramps to/from Military Highway (exit 2) May 12 from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Full closure of the I-464 south on-/off-ramps to/from the following locations May 12-14 from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. with ramps not closed concurrently:
    • Military Highway (exit 2)
    • Freeman Avenue (exit 3)
    • Poindexter Street (exit 4)
