JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts announced they are looking for a large brown or black dog that bit or scratched a person in James City County on Wednesday.
The incident took place in the 100 block of Meadowcrest Trail in the Mirror Lakes subdivision at approximately 10 p.m. April 3, according to the Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts.
If the dog is not found, the victim may have to undergo post-exposure treatment in the form of shots for the prevention of rabies. Once found, the dog will not be taken away from its owner, only placed on an in-home confinement period of 10 days, the Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts said.

The Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts remind residents to report all exposures, enjoy wildlife from a distance, and make sure that family pets are vaccinated and protected against the rabies virus.
Virginia state law requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated between three and four months of age and thereafter to maintain protection against rabies. Contact your veterinarian for further information.
