HAMPTON — The Virginia State Police (VSP) is asking for the public’s assistance in gathering more information regarding a shooting that occurred on Interstate 664 (I-664) in Hampton.
On Saturday, Dec. 18 at approximately 12:46 p.m., the VSP Communication Center received several calls regarding two vehicles involved in a shooting, which resulted in both crashing in the southbound lanes of Powhatan Parkway.
Upon arrival, VSP troopers found a 24-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds. He was treated at the scene and then taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called upon to investigate the incident.
According to a Dec. 19 release from VSP, preliminary investigations revealed that a gray 2011 Hyundai Sonata as well as a dark blue 2011 Dodge Journey SUV were traveling southbound on I-664 when the shooting took place. During this time, the vehicles collided, both losing control, spinning out, before striking the jersey walls on both sides of the interstate.
Witnesses described several Black American males exiting the Hyundai and fleeing the scene.
VSP is asking that anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Powhatan Parkway prior to or after when the incident took place and may have information regarding this incident to include possible suspicious behavior to contact VSP by calling (757) 424-6800 or to send an email to questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
