Welcome to On the Road! This column will have your weekly lane closures and roadwork reports for this coming week!

The list below covers full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and single-lane closures at the bridge-tunnels and the Coleman, High Rise and James River bridges.

Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.

NOTE: This list covers full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and lane closures at the bridge-tunnels and the Berkley, Coleman, High Rise and James River bridges.

Bridges & Tunnels

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64:

  • Alternating, mobile, single-lane closures westbound Sept. 27-28 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel, I-664:

  • Single-lane closure southbound Sept. 27 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Single-lane closures northbound Sept. 29-30 starting as early as 8 p.m. through 5 a.m.
  • Berkley Bridge, I-264:
  • A series of bridge test openings in each direction lasting up to 20 minutes each Sept. 27-28 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, Route 17:

  • Intermittent stoppages in both directions lasting up to 20 minutes each Sept. 26 between 12:01-6 a.m.

Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown Tunnels):

  • Go to Elizabeth River Tunnels for maintenance schedules on the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (U.S. 58) and MLK Expressway (Route 164).

Interstate 64 (I-64)

I-64 Widening Segment III Project, York County:

  • Single-lane closures on I-64 east and west from Route 199/Newman Road (exit 234) in Lightfoot to Route 199/Humelsine Parkway (exit 242) as needed Sept. 26-30 starting as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Full ramp closures on I-64 west with signed detours in place Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 as follows. (All ramps will not be closed at the same time.):On-ramp at Route 143/Merrimac Trail (exit 238A) starting as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • On- and off-ramps at Route 199/Newman Road in Lightfoot (exit 234A) from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Lane closures under flagger control on Rochambeau Drive, west of Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234) Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • A consecutive, long-term full ramp closure and diversion on the existing Route 199/Newman Road west on-ramp to I-64 west in Lightfoot continues. Westbound traffic on Route 199/Newman Road to follow detour signage in place directing motorists to a new temporary median crossover to access the Route 199/Newman Road east on-ramp to I-64 west during the closure.
  • A consecutive, long-term full ramp closure on Route 143/Merrimac Trail north to I-64 west continues. Traffic will follow detour signage in place directing motorists to the Route 143 south on-ramp to I-64 west during the closure.

I-64, Southside Widening, High Rise Bridge Expansion:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures on I-64 in both directions between South Military Highway (exit 297) and Greenbrier Parkway (exit 289):
    • Sept. 27-30 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Oct. 1 from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Oct. 2 from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
    • Oct. 3 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-64, Denbigh Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project, Newport News:

  • Double-lane closures on I-64 west at the Denbigh Boulevard overpass with brief, intermittent stoppages up to 20 minutes Sept. 26-27 starting as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Single-lane closures on I-64 in both directions at the Denbigh Boulevard overpass Sept. 28-30.
  • Lane closure under flagger control on Denbigh Boulevard, between Millwood Drive and Pocahontas Drive, with brief, intermittent stoppages Sept. 27 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

I-64, Newport News:

I-64, Express Lanes:

  •  Full closure in both directions:
    • Sept. 27 from 9-11:30 a.m.
    • Sept. 29 to Oct.1 from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.

I-64, Virginia Beach/Chesapeake

  • Triple-lane closures on I-64 in both directions between Indian River Road (exit 286) in Virginia Beach and Greenbrier Parkway (exit 289A/B) in Chesapeake Sept. 27 to Oct.1 starting as early as 11 p.m. to as late as 3 a.m., with brief, intermittent stoppages starting after midnight Oct. 1.

I-64, Norfolk:

  • Full ramp closure from Northampton Boulevard north (Route 13) to I-64 east Sept. 26-30 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Full ramp closure from Northampton Boulevard south (Route 13) to I-64 east and west Sept. 26-30 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Full ramp closure from I-64 east to Northampton Boulevard (exit 282A) Sept. 26-30 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Multi-lane closure on I-64 west from Norview Avenue (exit 279) to Granby Street (exit 276A) and full ramp closure from Tidewater Drive to I-64 west Sept. 27-28 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Interstate 264 (I-264)

I-64 / I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, Norfolk/Virginia Beach:

  • Alternating, multi-lane closures on I-264 in both directions from Newtown Road (exit 15) to Witchduck Road (exit 16) Sept. 26 to Oct. 2 from 7 p.m. until as late as 10 a.m.
  • Consecutive, double-lane closure on I-264 west between Witchduck Road (exit 16) and Newtown Road (exit 15) from Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. to Oct. 4 at 5 a.m.
  • Consecutive, single-lane closure on I-264 east from the Greenwich Road flyover to Witchduck Road (exit 16) in place through Sept. 27. Click here for the full traffic alert: https://conta.cc/3i40JPu

I-264, Virginia Beach:

  • Single-lane closure on I-264 west at Lynnhaven Parkway (exit 19A/B) Sept. 27-30 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. with full on- and off-ramp closures at Lynnhaven Parkway (exit 19A/B) from 12:01-5 a.m.

Interstate 664 (I-664)

I-664, Hampton:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures on the off-ramp from I-64 west to I-664 south:
    • Sept. 27-30 from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Oct. 1-2 from 6 p.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Alternating, single-lane closures on the off-ramp from I-664 north to I-64 east (exit 1B):
    • Sept. 26 from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Sept. 27-30 from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Oct. 1-2 from 6 p.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Alternating, single-lane closures on the off-ramp from I-664 north to I-64 west (exit 1A):
    • Sept. 27-30 from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Oct.1 from 6 p.m. to 11 a.m.
    • Oct. 2 from 5 p.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Full ramp closure from Aberdeen Road to I-664 north Sept. 26-28 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Interstate 95 (I-95)

I-95, Sussex County:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures on I-95 south from Henry Road (exit 20) to Lebanon Church Road (exit 8) Sept. 26-30 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Other Notable Closures

Laskin Road, Virginia Beach:
