STATEWIDE — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that it will take measures to ease traffic concerns ahead of the Labor Day weekend holiday.

In an Aug. 27 release from the department, VDOT states that it will suspend many of the highway work zones and lift lane closures on many interstates and major roads around the Commonwealth from Friday, Sept. 3 until Tuesday, Sept. 7.

The following measures will be put in place throughout Hampton Roads:

  • The Interstate 64 (I-64) Express Lanes in Norfolk will be available for use at no cost outside of normal operating hours. For more information, visit 64ExpressLanes.org.
  • Local traffic to Virginia Beach will be encouraged to use Interstate 664 (I-664) via the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) instead of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT).
  • Traffic heading to the Outer Banks is encouraged to use I-664 and the MMMBT.
