WILLIAMSBURG — Fourth graders at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School experienced life in colonial times as part of their Colonial Life unit. Students identified merchants’ goods and services using context clues and signs hanging from storefronts and tasted foods such as Brunswick stew (which they helped prepare) and hoecakes, an early Native American version of cornbread. They also tried traditional games such balero (a cup-in-ball game), string games and jackstraws, also known as pick-up sticks.
