According to VSP, an investigation revealed that during take-off, Oyebode attempted to pull the craft up at too steep of an angle, which caused it to stall. The aircraft dove and crashed into an embankment.

State police say that the plane reached an altitude of approximately 100 feet before it veered off course and crashed into the embankment near the airport’s runway.

Flight instructor and licensed commercial pilot Viktoria Theresie Izabelle Ljungman of Williamsburg was announced as deceased. The pilot, 18-year-old Oyebode, suffered serious injuries and was transported from the scene to Riverside Regional Medical Center. He was later flown to Virginia Commonwealth Univerisity (VCU) Hospital in Richmond.

An 18-year-old rear-seat passenger, also identified as an aviation student, was also transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center.
