WILLIAMSBURG — After posting a tremendous performance in the William & Mary football team’s 37-21 victory against Campbell, redshirt freshman cornerback Jalen Jones was selected as the FedEx Ground FCS National Defensive Player of the Week.
Making his first career start, Jones recorded three interceptions, highlighted by a 33-yard pick-six late in the third quarter that helped secure the win. The outstanding effort marked the first time a Tribe player has recorded three interceptions in a game since B.W. Webb (also a redshirt freshman at the time) accomplished the feat in the season-opening triumph at Virginia in 2009.
Jones piled up 61 return yards with his interceptions and also posted a pair of pass breakups and a tackle.
His impressive effort also helped him garner Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Off to its best start since 2009, W&M will look to improve to 3-0 when it concludes its non-conference slate at Lafayette on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Tribe’s next home game, which will be part of Family Weekend, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3:30.
